Allah: God against Himself?

Reader comment on item: Is Allah God?

Submitted by Eric Retzlaff (United States), Jul 9, 2005 at 21:22

Islam arose at a time when Christian and Jews inhabited the Middle East and North Africa, but after conquests by Muslims, those areas became predominently Muslim. Europe might be Muslim today if Islam's attacks were not repulsed by Christians (see note below). If Allah is the same as the Judaeo-Christian God, is God fighting against himself?

Note: It was on Sept. 11, 1693, at Vienna, that the Europeans decisively defeated Muslims of the Ottoman Empire, leading to a progressive decline in Islamic power. After Sept. 11, 2001, the United States struck back at Al Qaeda, attacking Taliban-controlled Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2001, coincidentally the anniversary of the Christian forces' defeat of a Muslim fleet at Lepanto in 1571.
