Mistake

Reader comment on item: Is Allah God?

Submitted by Zaheer Awan (United States), Jun 28, 2005 at 17:07

Mr. Pipes,

I would like to draw your attention to the following mistake in your piece:

"Moses and Jesus introduced mistakes into the Word of God..."

If I say this in Pakistan, I'm sure I'll be killed for blasphemy. Although I disagree with you on 99.99% of your views, I do acknowledge that you're decently informed about Middle Eastern issues. Therefore, I'm assuming this was just an unintentional slip.

Moses and Jesus (may Allah's peace be upon them) did not introduce mistakes into the Word of God. Their followers, albeit, did. As Muslims, we're taught that these two prophets were Muslims, and that they propogated Allah's message to their people.

Sure, Moses' and Jesus' followers altered the message and ended up calling it Judaism and Christianity respectively, but with this, Muslims also believe that the message revealed was always the message of Islam.

Don't forget that Muslims believe the message was not in its complete form when revealed to Moses and Jesus, as according to us, Allah revealed the message in stages. We believe that the revelation of the message was completed with the Prophet Mohammad (may Allah's peace be on him).

Thank you and regards,

Zaheer Awan

Daniel Pipes replies:

This sentence of mine prompted quite a bit of discussion of the issue of tahrif - for example see Robert Spencer's "Corrupted Scriptures and those who read them," http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/006865.php, and I have learned much in the process.

My view is based largely on Qur'an 22:52 and commentaries on that aya. I continue to hold to this position, though I now comprehend and appreciate the contrary arguments more fully.
