And the Blockade?

Reader comment on item: Lessons of the War in Gaza

Submitted by Akber Choudhry (Canada), Aug 10, 2014 at 16:54

* The dead-end of a people with nothing more to lose came to worldwide attention. The blockade of Gaza was recognized as a multi-year siege. No Blockade=Prosperous Gaza=No Hamas support. However, prosperous Gaza = no future hope of Israel annexing that strip. So the equation is clear.

* The word 'purportedly' is out of place. Shelling, mortars and supersonic planes dropping bombs over urban areas produce massive civilian casualties. Shelling, Tanks and F-16s are not for urban warfare.

Make Gaza prosperous with the condition of going in and rooting out any terrorist cell. The human and signals intelligence is superb. Mano-a-mano, commandos - take them out. Do not use blunt weapons of mass destruction on a defenceless population.

The real question is: Israel occupies Gaza and controls every part of life in that strip. Does it view a future for it, or ultimately wants to depopulate and annex it? This will answer what it should do.

Even if Gaza is obliterated, its ruins will weigh down Israel and Zionism with guilt for centuries.
