Reader comment on item: An Israeli Apology to Turkey
in response to reader comment: meaning of an apology

I'm sorry but I think you do not have all the facts of what happened, which is understandable given your sources. Here is the actual footage with sound (unfortunately it is in Hebrew, but I can assure you that they are saying how surprised they are- the Israeli soldiers- that they are being attacked and the radio communication is describing the 'activists' as armed fighters.

The Israelis did not open fire indiscriminately on these innocent activists. First, it is customary to board a vessel to guide it back out to less threatening location. We can argue about international waters or not, but the fact is that it was a pure publicity stunt and they were looking to create a scandal.
Second, once boarded they were attacked and wounded, stabbed and fired on. There was no intention by the Israelis to kill anyone and I wish it had not happened that way, but they were so overwhelmed and unprepared that chaos ensued. It is a tragedy all the way round.

Third, you acknowledge and then dismiss the fact that they were Islamists as if it has no bearing on the matter at all.
