In the Sleek, contented smile

Reader comment on item: An Israeli Apology to Turkey

Submitted by Constantinos Kalotaris (Cyprus), Mar 23, 2013 at 09:38

What a mess! Is really Obama Israel's ally or a feint? Is he a kind of a "Merkel to the Cypriots"?. Is he a devout reader and follower of Ovid's "metamorphosis" where the new "Arachne" he seeks to create will devour his only true devotee in the future?

The Prime Minister of Israel should have stuck to Bernard Lewis' advice on the matter- because Lewis knows the Islamic way of thinking pretty well -and little by little year by year the islamic net to be formed under the directions and final control of Turkey will create new realities which will become a solid basis for what somebody might call then, the new sound "realpolitic".

The "fourth Reich" of Mrs Merkel will edge and support the brand new Ottoman Empire and will leave no room for breathing to anybody else. If for a moment we peep on a middle East map -now and one hundred years ago - we will be astonished at their(to be) similarity!

We the people of Cyprus we will fight the good fight and we will never surrender. Every night I read to my son the Iliad, the epic of Achilles and in parallel the relevant Kavafis' poems-the horses of Achilles etc-and also Herodotus Stories in which he refers regularly to "Hubris" which is followed by "Ate" and "Nemesis" to final destruction. And I know that we have to wait. But to the Jewish people I have nothing else to say but to remind them of their ancestors, their heritage and also their privilege to have a country of their own and I code a strong verse of the Lewis' poem "the Dirge" for a kind of admonishment and remembrance :

"In the feckless, flirting pairs,

In the dishes full of food,

in the wineglass, in the wine,

In the sleek, contented smile,

I see them die."
