The purpose of the September 11, 2001, attacks was not only to provoke the US and the West in general into occupying a Muslim country, but also to let Islamists and all Muslims know that the US could not protect its agents and supposed puppet regimes in Muslim countries, because it apparently cannot protect the symbolic bases of its own financial, military and political power.

Now Islamists appear to have acted on that message--most importantly, ON THEIR OWN SCHEDULE, LONG-TERM.
