A Huge Opportunity

Reader comment on item: Count Palestine Refugees?

Senator Kirk and everyone involved in pulling this off deserve tremendous praise. It seems to me, this is an issue that Israel supporters all along the political spectrum should be able to support. The question is, will they? It is outrageous exceptions to U.N. policy such as counting descendants as part of the total Palestinian refugee population that have allowed the Middle East conflict to drag on, decade after decade. I would like to think that leaders throughout the Jewish community would use this issue to unite Jews in bringing pressure to bear upon the Obama administration, if it continues to resist complying with the amendment. Through the U.N., the world has found myriad ways to make Israel pay for Arab and Muslim aggression and hate. Yet, Palestinian refugees and their descendants live as second-class citizens throughout the Arab world. The Kirk amendment has the potential to bring the facts of this conflict, as opposed to the layer upon layer of propaganda and lies that pass for fact nowadays, to light. The American Jewish community ought to stand firmly behind the Kirk amendment and not let our State Department or the Obama administration wriggle out of compliance with it.
