U.S. right wing also rejects free speech

Reader comment on item: CAIR's Assault on Paul Harvey

Submitted by Lawrence Rosler (United States), Dec 24, 2003 at 13:03

Pipes "Comment: CAIR here rejects the American principle of free speech and the belief that differences in opinion should be dealt with through reasoned discourse; it wants to close down debate. I can think of no U.S. organizations except the militant Islamic ones that deploy comparable tactics."

One need not have a long memory to recall the boycott of CBS threatened before it aired a docudrama perceived as critical of Ronald Reagan. See http://www.boycottcbs.com/ or http://www.mediaresearch.org/inthenews/2003/news1003.asp :

"Brent Bozell, president of the Washington-based Media Research Center, announced he had written to the nation's top 100 advertisers asking them to preview "The Reagans" before making a sponsorship decision."

Many more examples of attempts to suppress debate can be found all over the political spectrum. CAIR is merely following this widespread dishonorable trend among advocacy groups.
