Reader comment on item: CAIR's Assault on Paul Harvey

Submitted by Michael Kelemen (United States), Dec 24, 2003 at 08:39

Daniel, I'm not with you or Rich Lowry on Paul Harvey. In fact, I'm surprised at your view since Harvey was clearly out of line.

No Jewish organization would tolerate some radio announcer making a blanket generalized statement like that. It's simply bigoted.

The same, I'm sure would be true of Christians. Maybe less, but only because they do not feel threatened in North American society.

Every religion for practical reasons "encourages", endorses, allows and even mandates killing in some circumstances. Most Muslims say that it is only in self-defence and that the terrorists who have carried this idea too far.

Even if many Muslims seem to be sympathetic to Al Qaeda, that doesn't warrant Paul Harvey's statement. It's demagogic hate-mongering and should be pursued as such.

I'm Jewish, I care about Israel and I support the War on Terror. And I believe that it's imperative that at this time especially - for our own good and credibility- that we do not betray our own principles of human rights and decency and civility.

In my mind, I"ve taken your side in many battles (like that at York U) because you're critical and respectful at the same time. I don't expect Muslims to like you because the people on the receiving end of criticism never see it as valiid. But in this case, I do not agree.
