Good idea

Reader comment on item: Mosque in Cordoba, Church in Damascus

Submitted by Safraz (United States), Dec 30, 2006 at 02:44

Good idea, but its really up to the local governments, and I think Spain would be setting a great example if it allowed Muslim worship in the Cordoba Church/Mosque.

Upon the Muslim conquest of Damascus, and for centuries after, the Ummayad Mosque was a shared church and mosque - both Christiians and Muslims worshipped there in harmony - so that is definitely powerful precedent to argue to the Syrian authorities.

And by the way, some of your readers may be surprised to learn that today, Muslims are not allowed to worship at Aya Sofia in Istanbul. It is a secular museum - with a larger than life images of Mary and Jesus on prominent display. If you tried to pray there, whether you are Muslim or Christian, the security guards would kick you out .
