The Real Problem in the Middle EastReader comment on item: Hope for the Middle East Submitted by Michael Rifkin (United States), May 21, 2002 at 18:08 Although I agree with Dr. Pipes that there is increasing evidence that the Palestinians and the so-called moderate Arab block are beginning to recognize that Arafat has led or is leading them down a winding road toward disaster, I fear that the real problem in the Middle East conflict is Kofi Annan and Colin Powell, who continue to believe that "that there is no military solution—and that Israel must accommodate Palestinian demands." I cannot help but recall with dismay, that it was Colin Powell who sold George Bush, Sr. on the idea that Sadaam was no longer a threat after Desert Storm.M.R.
