TomReader comment on item: Distinguishing between Islam and Islamism Submitted by Octavio Johanson (Italy), Mar 16, 2006 at 10:53 Dear Tom,when the IRA killed people, Catholics from all over the world condemned the violence. Of course, Christian fundamentalism exists. Indeed, the word "fundamentalism" comes from Protestantism and its own interpretation of the Scriptures, also known as Sola Scriptura. But, when the KKK bombed black churches, there was a strong condemnation from Protestants. And, when American Protestants kill abortionist doctors, it is their fellow Protestants who condemn them. When Lebanese Christians killed the Palestinians, it was the world-wide Christian community who felt outraged: every year, there is a service in a Church in Hampstead, London, to remember Chabra and Chatila. And when Serbian Orthodox Christians killed people, it was the Christian West who decided to stop them. These actions and condemnations are unmatched in the Muslim world. Christian fundamentalism cannot be equated to Islamic fundamentalism. Your definition of "Christianism" is naive and you cannot compare American evangelists with Bin Laden. Christians didn't kill 3,000 people on 9-11, they didn't hijack planes, commit suicide-attacks. Christianity is, by far, the most peaceful religion in the world.
