A Cross and Angry ResponseReader comment on item: Distinguishing between Islam and Islamism Submitted by Tony Iveson (United Kingdom), Oct 29, 2007 at 13:37 Of course you feel insulted, you have been programmed to feel that way. Your language is immoderate and you present yourself as a moderate muslim. The views I expressed in my earlier e-mail are not mine alone. They are the views of many non-muslims who have studied the Koran and the history of your religion whether those people be Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Jain, or even atheists. It is difficult to think anything else once one has examined the evidence. The many westerners who have not read the Koran or studied your religion and the acts done in its name do not fully understand, but they do observe how your co-religionists behave in the world when Islam is deemed to be threatened. That is enough to make them realise that something is not right or humane or forgiving about Islam. As time goes by and more atrocities are committed, more and more western eyes will open fully. Your defence of Islam is violence, the defence of Christianity is to turn the other cheek and ask the aggressor to strike it. When a Christian disobeys that instruction, he disobeys his God. When a muslim fights violently for Islam, he is obeying his God's instructions. That is the essential difference - the Christian God requires His followers to tolerate and accept pain and even death because He forbids violence as a reaction to violence. In Islam, If Islam or the prophet are insulted, violence is compulsory. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
