Reader comment on item: Distinguishing between Islam and Islamism

Mr. Pipes,
The movement of so called modernization in Islam is not new. You are forgetting the rise and fall of "Mutazilla" movement in Islamic Persia.
There are aparent paradoxes in your own arguments. If Islamism is a product of Islam's downfall and failure 200 years ago, then how come is it ignoring the foremost lesson of modern civilization: human rights ?

If you really want to trace the roots of islamism (if any such thing exist) then looking back about 30 to 50 years is more appropriate. It may well be a bi-product of Soviet-Afghan war, and US policy of containment.
