Mr. Pipes has written consistently and often about political and security matters in the State of Israel. As a commentator he certainly has the right to do so and I frequently agree with his remarks. However, more and more, Mr. Pipes has written as if Israel was a mere annex to the United States.
The party political machinations of Ariel Sharon, or for that matter any other Israeli politician, are the business of the people of Israel.
I fear that Mr. Pipes has lost sight of the fact that Israel is not the United States, and that from time to time its policies and political actions will diverge from the interests of this country. If Ariel Sharon believes it is in the best interests (his and Israel's) to form a new party so be it. I think that columns like this one would be more suitable for inclusion in, say, the Jerusalem Post, Ha'aretz or perhaps the New York Daily Forwards.
