Israel is the only democratic country in the Middle East and the only country on which the US can really rely. The Middle East is important to the US because that is where we get much of the oil necessary for our economic survival and because the Islamicists from there are out to destroy us and take over the world. They are not limiting themselves to Israel and if Israel is weakened, so are we.
If Ariel Sharon develops a new party that has strength for a period of time, even if that is a short period, and he is the leader of that party, there are indications that he would greatly weaken Israel, which means that our one democratic ally in the Middle East could be much more greatly imperiled and the terrorists would gain ground, both literally and figuratively. This would be very, very bad for the US.
So, from a purely selfish American point of view, we need to make sure that Israel is strong and vital.
