There is nothing to be baffled about. Shas became a new start party springing out of the Agudat Israel / Haredi grouping. In general it was a protest against the exclusion of Sephardim from power ,in what is and probably always will be, the Ashkenasi Haredi party. Specifically it was a protest against the exclusion and ridicule of Spiritual Leader Ovadia Yosef from the Council of Torah Sages.
