This was a man of hate and ugliness

Van Gogh's comments incited violence. You can say that legally, one cannot incite violence with words, but we know this is not true. He wanted to degrade all people who practice Islam with his deflammatory comments. People should actually read his remarks about Islam. It was expected that an extremist would take action against him. His words were violent and ugly and his death was as well.
