Economic policy can help solve the Islamist problem

Reader comment on item: [Theo van Gogh and] "Education By Murder" in Holland

Submitted by Bottomfish (United States), Nov 21, 2004 at 09:31

It is well-known that the jihad warriors in all countries tend to be unemployed young guys at loose ends. In Middle Eastern countries, the high birth rate generates more people than there are jobs, and in Europe, economic growth is languid compared to that in the U.S. A website on the Netherlands reports that "Application numbers for Dutch unemployment benefits are increasing all the time. More and more people are actively looking for new jobs and in certain sectors vacancies are scarce." (See www.expatica.com).

Economic policies that result in plentiful job opportunities, therefore, may help to limit Islamic terrorism.
