xenophobia or anti-islam

Reader comment on item: "You can't fight Islamism with ideas coming out of Europe"
in response to reader comment: Probing Further

Peter, each and every country is special in Europe I guess. In Holland I remember that many of the Indonesian people, Indonesia being an ex-dutch-colony, wear a cross around their neck indicating they are indonesian christians rather than indonesian muslims. I assume that to them it proved to be effective with respect to reactions of the native population.

One anecdote: It was the time of the football worldcup 2006. I went into an internet cafe in germany run by a somali. frequented by many arab north-africans and went in there with a friend of mine who fled Vietnam on a boat. An elderly man from Syria entered complaining to the shop-boss that the german authorities still treat him like a foreigner even after 20 years living in Germany. I asked him "who is going to be world champion". His answer "I am not interested in football". I concluded "you are a foreigner indeed." No need to talk religion when there is no basic understanding to start with.
