The essence of totalitarianism

Ron Thompson is right. Surely a religion of laws which has claimed for almost 1400 years to regulate every aspect of human existence from the most private to the most public, grounds those laws in a set of 'revelations' that are claimed to have existed unchanged from all eternity and proclaims death as the sanction for those who turn renegade ("seize them and slay them" Sh 4:89) or oppose its political rule ("spreading tumult in the land" Sh 5:32) is the very definition of totalitarianism. The apparent difference between traditional Islam and modern Islamism may be no more than the availability of a disproportionately large young male Muslim demographic and 21st century technology to help it attempt to enforce its rule.
