Reader comment on item: "You can't fight Islamism with ideas coming out of Europe"
in response to reader comment: Wallraff and Germany today

Submitted by Peter Herz (United States), Dec 3, 2010 at 23:00

Thanks, Myth.

Still, I am very curious about how contemporary Germany (and the rest of Europe, for that matter), views non-Muslim Middle Eastern immigrants (Copts, Assyrians, Mizrahis, Zoroastrians, etc.). Walraff's experiment sounded much like a similar experiment undertaken back in the 1950's by a white American journalist (I forget his name) who wrote a book _Black like Me_, in which my own country's very real [alas] racism was exposed.

My own guess is that if "Indigenous Europeans" are indeed accepting of the non-Muslim "darker" immigrants but anxious and bothered by Muslims, we are witnessing not a mere xenophobia, but an issue dealing with Islam alone. I believe this would be a significant difference.
