A Vigorous Vocal MinorityReader comment on item: Hating America's Success Submitted by Bill Finlay (United States), Oct 20, 2004 at 10:17 Most of the anti-American sentiment we see is a good example of how a small number of people can make themselves heard by placing themselves in the spotlight. My work takes me to Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and Central America where I interact with the locals. I have never encountered the type of "hatred" or "disrespect" we hear about in the popular media. Everywhere I go people want to hear about my country and gush with enthusiasm about America and what a good place it is and how they love the people. The America haters have intentionally tried to make themselves larger than life by placing themselves into positions where they can control public opinion (media, universities, yes, even congress and the senate). Let's counteract this dishonesty by placing enthusiastic pro-Americans in these positions.
