I think there is a perspective that America emerged from the Cold War as a so-called Hyperpower, but I don't think that is an American perspective. I'm a little over 40, American born, and it seems to me that America has always been strong and offered its citizens the right to pursue life as they choose. As I grew up, I was more amazed that the rest of the world wasn't like us.
As for the hatred toward America, I think it is genuine, misguided, but not deep. I still respect Europeans and think they rival us in many ways. But, America is so huge, wealthy and diverse, one has to look collectively at Europe to make any fair comparisons.
This I know: I love my country, and hope others will find the success we have.
