I was mistaken, it was Barack Obama's parents who met in a Russian language class

I was mistaken, I heard the news story and confused Barack Obama's history with his father and mother's history.

However I still think that the point about a certain admiration for the Former Soviet Union defining Barack Obama is valid. This as a result of his upbringing in a home with what were apparently parents who had a negative attitude towards America and capitalism and their seeming positive attitude towards the USSR and communism in general.
