Carter -- My recollection of the exact Hadith is errant, so I'll research it. In the meantime, here are a few interesting and relevant links:

The ironic thing is that dogs were loved and valued parts of Arab households before the Prophet. Apparently they became despised after him? Now I'm looking for an anthropological historian to explain this? But clearly, this issue highlights a discrepancy between Judaism and Christianity which accept dogs as legitimate home companions (but which probably frown on prevailing standards of "adoration" of these pets) and the nearly complete revulsion under Islam toward the species in the home.
