Learning Arabic

Hi Daniel

I share your experience. Muslims believe that those of us that learn Arabic are infidels that have seen the light and are planning to convert to islam. This is very puzzling, more so in the case of such culturaly sophisticated city as Cairo where I did learn my Arabic.

As for learning the Arabic language leading to improving the morals of us infidels: The Egyptian Arabic that I know very well is a language that is full of swear words and this indeed makes it such a great dialect of Arabic. I remember during a visit to Cairo by the Indian Muslim Zakir Naik was giving a lecture but the biggest joke was how to vocalize his last name as his last name is a vulgar Egyptian word for sex. And knowing Egyptians very well I suspect that his first name only was used and everyone was giggling about his last name.

I also understand that Jews in Israel use Arabic swear words which I think is just great.

But again the idea that knowing a language, and in this case Arabic, will improve morals is nothing but nonsense.
