Principled Objections and New Temple Proposal

Reader comment on item: The London Markaz

Submitted by Mark Barrett (United Kingdom), Dec 9, 2006 at 19:28

I have two principled objections to the Markazi Mosque proposal, and an alternative suggestion:

[1] EXTREMIST/REACTIONARY BACKGROUND OF TABLIGH AL JAMAAT

It is being proposed and funded by the reactionary Tabligh al Jamaat.

[2] NO TO OLYMPIC FAVOUR FOR ISLAM [OR ANY OTHER RELIGION]

It may be appropriate to have a place of worship at the Olympic Games, but not one that privileges any one religion. If there is to be
a building for religious contemplation, it should honour the essence of ALL of the world religions, or there should be no building at all.

[3] YES TO AN OLYMPIC TEMPLE FOR THE EARTH AND ITS INDIGENOUS

If anything deserves to be honoured, it is the earth, and the earth centered indigenous tradition, brutally patronised, exploited and
wiped out by so-called European "civilisation" as it killed and kicked people off the land to make way for its unspeakable conquests. Any building that has a role of symbolising 2012 should reflect the dark past of Europe and avoid appeasing the reactionary parts of the Islamic world. The Olympics should be about the best of this indigenous human, and the oneness of the earth, nature and all its human and creaturely family.

So, for an alternative Olympic design, please go here and have a look at this giant koan:
