Adam, it is not a local Muslim group but quite a radical group affiliated with some very dubious characters , bombers included and the money is partly Saudi in origin. You know who is Saudi don't you. No doubt there will be plenty of funding coming from taxpayers money as previously. This is not the point though, the main concern should be a. The sitie of this overwhelming bastion to the Muslim faith. Why we need to ask ourselves in such a place near the OLYMPICS. What does this say to the world? b. Why so large and therefore prominent.

There are no equals , sizewise in any other places of religious worship. Including Christian churches. The councellor at Newham object s with good reason. Many locals object too. There needs to be a thorough investigation into this scheme and certainly no quango deciding it's virtues. Your reasoning that the site is derelict is really not clear thinking. Are you implying that all such sites should be turned into whatever,Casinos, dens of iniquity, religious centres, shopping malls, rather than check out the authenticity of the change. That's rather lazy don't you think.
