Reader comment on item: Militant Islam's New Strongholds

Submitted by Gary (United States), Oct 22, 2002 at 13:14

I was just speaking with my cousin last night about Islamism and how it is spreading throughout the world, but in different phases and manifestations. The heart of Islamism is still clearly entrenched in the Middle East with violence exhibited toward Israel considered to be normal and morally justifiable.

The regions that you describe in today's article (the Phillipines should also be included) are in that next advanced phase, where Islamism is openly using violence to achieve its political agenda.

Furthermore, I believe Europe is now approaching the level that you have described above with respect to Indonesia, Africa and Bangladesh. Islamists in Europe, although perhaps not openly violent against their hosts, have clearly planted the seeds politically to open the door to future violence (see Pipes' article about Denmark and Islamism in Europe). Of course some violence is already taking hold like increases in European crime and the assassination of the Dutch politician who was running on an anti (Muslim) immigration platform.

Finally, in the US and Canada, Islamists, although not pervasively violent against the American host nations, show signs of violence as for example on various campuses, e.g. Concordia University in Montreal, but are still in the preliminary phases. Here they are obviously using the college campus as a tool, as well as our liberal legal system and media to spread their hate filled, facist message. Hopefully more Americans and Canadians will recognize that we will soon experience the type of violence that was described in this article if we don't act to eliminate Islamism from the US and the rest of the world.

Thanks again, Daniel, for being on the front lines of this horrible war.
