The ends justify the means?

Reader comment on item: A Reluctant but Unhesitating Vote for Donald Trump
in response to reader comment: You have the courage to ignore some of your convictions

As someone who opposes Trump for many reasons I read your article with interest- and the essence of what I got was 'the ends justify the means'. I have been there before- back when Clinton was impeached for lying about a blowjob in the White House. Then I supported Clinton- because he was a great President and just as you now- I was with Clinton at least 80% of his decisions. But now looking back I think he should have resigned- because character does matter. The thing about Trump that scares me the most is his attacks on the press and the truth. You acknowledge his strong man admiration and tendencies- and attacking the press and the truth are classic strong man tactics. I think that Trump's attack on the press- calling any news report critical of him to be 'Fake' even as he directs his own pocket press bury stories about him; and Trump's attacks on the truth- literally his drive to make Americans doubt facts- will harm the United States for years- maybe decades. Republicans are now supporting a man who is trying to convince Americans that they should only believe what he tells them- and that no other source is to be trusted unless he tells them so. Maybe Trump doesn't become a tin-horn dictator- but he is setting the stage for a future one- which could be on the right or the left.
