Reader comment on item: A Reluctant but Unhesitating Vote for Donald Trump
in response to reader comment: The survival of the Republic supersedes Loyalty to the Party

Jeff, I understand your feelings but you were a bit thin on detail.

How has President Trump subverted the independence of the Justice Department? Since when is the Justice Department independent? The President appoints the attorney general. That's the law and has been since the office of attorney general was established.

How has President Trump disemboweled the FBI? By firing its director (same as President Clinton did in 1993) who serves at the pleasure of the President?

How has President Trump circumvented Congress? By attacking a country, say, for example, Libya, without congressional authorization or even congressional notification?

How has President Trump sought to pack the courts? The number of Supreme Court justices stood at nine when he took office. It still does and President Trump has made no effort to change that (as FDR did). The number of federal district and appeals court judges is set by Congress, not the President.

How is President Trump's consideration of invoking the Insurrection Act so different from that of President Bush, who did invoke the Insurrection Act and called out troops in 1992, when only one city was experiencing riots?
