Reader comment on item: [The Canadian Islamic Congress:] An Islamist Apology

Submitted by Arlene Bindon (Australia), Jul 25, 2005 at 00:16

As an expat Canadian living in Australia for the past 25 years, I found it satisfying to read that you used the rule of law and got the apology you so deserved.

We deal with the same problem daily here in Australia. Melbourne's top imam appeared on "our" 60 Minutes and praised Osama Bin Laden, saying he is a "great" man.

Firstly, why isn't he in jail after making a public, seditious, treasonable comment? Australia is at war. We have troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Secondly, John Howard, our PM called the imam's words "inflammatory". A very gentle tap on the wrist one would think. Next thing you know, the imam is getting heaps of press, demanding an apology from Howard and saying that Howard's remarks are "inflammatory".

We're in an ideological struggle to the death and yet, virtually nobody is calling a spade a spade.
