you once thought OBL was more important!

Reader comment on item: Thoughts on the Killing of Osama bin Laden

Dear Sir,

may one remind you that in October 2001 you wrote that "Osama Bin Laden's supporters are legion" and presented him as rather more important than here. "Just" a part of Al Quaida? Just as the Nazis fell apart after Hitler committed suicide, so will this awful scourge, Nazi-Islam, fall apart without its hateful leader. Yes, I see you say we have not fought the big war yet - that's a point we could argue about, and I would say look at the Arab revolutions and we probably won't have to - but I don't appreciate how you minimize Obama's achievement by bickering with "the left" and "pride" at this moment. Give credit where credit is due, especially when once you called for this action above all.

Daniel Pipes replies:

Al-Qaeda was important in October 2001 but decreasingly so since then.

As for the left, I note with interest that, so far, the European wing has come down hard against the raid on bin Laden while the American one has stayed relatively quiet.
