more than a figurehead

Reader comment on item: Thoughts on the Killing of Osama bin Laden

ZSI, Osama bin Laden was far more than a figurehead. He, while fighting himself, drove the soviets out of Afghanistan, had the vision to attack the US mainland and actually launched such an attack with success and subsequently enjoyed some james-bond-style villain image in the media. Nobody else can claim such an impressive record.

Imagine somebody from the opposite camp would drive out Hisballah from Lebanon and conduct an attack on Iran. That is the level of impact bin Laden had.

Bin Laden's international approach, attacking US soil in particular, will not find a replacement leader for it proved to be somewhat counterproductive to the islamist agenda. I do not expect any self-appointed leaders to stick out their heads as much as bin Laden did.
