Can't Resist Asking This Controversial Question ...

Reader comment on item: The Ninth 9/11

Submitted by Alex (United States), Sep 12, 2010 at 23:08

One subject that Dr. Pipes does not mention in this brief but thoughtful and thorough review of Americans' grasp of issues related to 9/11 is that of the sponsorship by nation-states (in particular, the Islamic Republic of Iran) of Islamist terrorism.

So, two questions I would pose to him are, one, to what extent have Americans--including our government--come to appreciate the role of state-sponsorship, as opposed to the "network" model for understanding terrorism, and would Americans even need to fully realize up the threat of Islamism if its state-sponsorship were eliminated?

Daniel Pipes replies:

1 - There's a formal list of state sponsors of terrorism and the IRI is prominently on it.

2 - Yes, because states are not at all the whole story.
