Aymenn, I see reason why the US should not do both, support oppostion and an preemptive airstrike. As for supporting opposition I seriously advise any government to support individual people in opposition publicly. That gives them the media attention necessary to protect them and it steers clear of risks identifying the true political motives of groups.
