Reader comment on item: Zionism's Bleak Present

Okay, so Israel was born. Not of divine decree like the fundamentalists had fantasized, but of Holocaust. The dream is over, two millenia of utopian idealism gave birth to an imperfect child. What a depressing reality. Now Jews worldwide can flagellate themselves because the world does not like them.

\But wait, wasn't that happening all along anyway? So maybe a little adversity is what is indicated here. People who struggle for survival do not suffer from depression and suicide. Those are affictions of comfort, diseases of affluence. At 50 years of age, Israel is facing an adolescent identity crisis. Only an escalation of conflict can resolve the confusion. This is a ultimately a mean universe, and the struggle for survival justifies one's existence. But it's better than extinction. --
