Reader comment on item: Zionism's Bleak Present

Submitted by Edward Halper (United States), Oct 11, 2007 at 03:07

Sadly, Israel follows the west in losing its national identity. I think that the problem is that the only enduring and distinctive feature of the Jewish state is the precisely the Judaism that secular Israelis cannot countenance. It is ironic that the group initially most opposed to Zionism is now the one most ready to link itself it the Jewish state.

It is also ironic that the secular values that work against national identity are the distinctive achievement of western culture. It is as if its own achievement rendered it ideologically defenseless against attacks from retrograde cultures.
