Israeli retreat

Reader comment on item: Mr. Olmert Visits Washington

Submitted by Daniel M (United States), May 16, 2006 at 17:39

You know, I might not be a scholar and only an amateur historian. But, it occurs to me that the withdrawal from the West Bank (and the proposed "retreat" from Gaza) might just be part of a broader, ultimately more agressive strategy: where attacks staged from those locations "force" a very hard-line approach, indeed. Personally, should this be the case, I would not be opposed. To tell the world, "I told you so!" and finally take forceful and decisive military action against the Jihadists - with the intent of wiping them out, once and for all, wouldn't be such a bad thing. Of course, I could be way off the mark.

Regardless, I certainly feel for the innocents who will be sacrificed in the inevitable bombings, shellings, and missle strikes which will assuredly emanate from Gaza and the West Bank. But, hopefully, those sacrifices will not be in vain. And this clash of civilizations will be won: by US and Israeli might - brought to bear, at least, to quash those who would impose their barbaric ways on a people and culture who refuse to be subjugated or intimidated into further appeasement.
