Lots of work for Muslims to do

I also supported going into Iraq and I clung to that view for a long time, but it looks more and more like a waste of time and resources. The next time someone complains that the US supports dictators in the Middle East, I will point to Iraq and what America got for its efforts to promote freedom. If it's not acceptable to work with dictatorships and it's not acceptable to depose them then the only alternative is indifference.

You're right that there's a lot of work to do in the Middle East, but the West can't do any of it. Unless and until Muslims themselves decide that being associated with Western principles is not taboo, there is nothing we can do there. If they want to be free, they're going to have to free themselves. I will welcome the day when Muslims decide they can live in freedom and equality with all non-Muslims. Until then, they're on their own.
