in response to reader comment: Why USA should continue giving help to Israel.....

...The extent of current anti-American views, which are held by the majority of the population in much of the world is a relatively new phenomenon and hence nothing to do with the US's power and success.

The Bush administration initially openly stated that it did not what to get involved in world affairs and, when it changed its mind, declared that the US knew best as to how to deal with these problems. This has antagonised the rest of the world. This wouldn't be so bad if it hadn't been proved so comprehensively wrong and had to U-turn

eg 1) First the Bush administration said the Israel/Palestine issue was unimportant to the US and pulled out of the peace process-it has now U-turned since 9/11 and admitted a solution is vital to world security

2)It stated global warming was not happening. Now even Dubya admits it may be happening (in accordance with the UN and the scientific academies of all G8 nations including the American Academy of Science who have explicitly stated it is happpening)

3)Iraq. I could write at length abouth Iraq but the mistakes are clear, both logistical and tactical. Perhaps the one that is the most pertinent is that giving the impression that it was an American conquest, by making it clear they did not care about the opinion of the rest of the world, has stoked up anti-Americanism and made another 9/11 more likely.
