Reader comment on item: Korean Delusions [of Appeasement]

Submitted by Harry Johnson (United States), Oct 9, 2002 at 14:49

I haven't read the original Eberstadt piece, but Pipes' otherwise excellent summation of an insightful piece is worded in such a way that could set up Eberstadt and himself. Here's the bottom line in a quote that quotes from Eberstadt.:

"This is where, as Eberstadt rightly notes, South Korean policy "has inadvertently set in play powerful forces" that could not only jeopardize South Korea's military alliance with the United States but could "trigger a major diminishment of American influence in the Pacific." East Asian stability and economic growth could lastingly be harmed were this to happen."

Aha! says the liberal, who in his rage never gets to the last sentence. Finally we have an uncorrupt Korean President who has the confidence to take the first steps towards resolving the Korean impasse and the right wing neanderthals immediately accuse him of of jeopardizing American power projection and influence in Asia...
