Yes, it did begin in 1979--I was there.
Reader comment on article: Korean Delusions [of Appeasement]

This is to compliment you on the mission that you've undertaken to shed light on all of the untruths that have been endemic not only on our American college campuses, but in our media in general.

I was in Teheran in 1979 as a director in one of the departments at the private International School. Shortly after arriving there in '78, all hell burst loose. With brevity, let's say that I lasted there until '79 when almost all of my neighbors decided to go up to the roofs one night with guns and rifles in tow, and to tell "Allah, Hoo Akhbar" (I hope that I transliterated it correctly) while keeping me awake the whole night.

During my last month in Teheran, I masqueraded around as a dumb, Argentinean teacher imported to teach English while I only spoke Spanish. This was because roaming mobs of Iranians were in search of Americans to scratch to death with their nails (their preferred way of street fighting) and, since I was a Jew with an Argentinean father, it never entered their minds how on earth could I teach English!

Anyway, to make a long story short, I and several other American teachers were evacuated on Pan Am's 747 Flagship "Kit Carson" accompanied by two undercover Dept. of Defense Army Colonels.

And yes, I knew that the Moslem war against America had started, but when I returned to N.Y. City, no one wanted to believe me. Go Figure!!!!
