Mr. Pipes actually learns from history
Reader comment on article: Korean Delusions [of Appeasement]

Submitted by Doug Duncan (United States), Jan 6, 2003 at 01:52

I don't understand those reviewers who believe South Korean- North Korean friendship and rising anti-Americanism in South Korea has nothing to do with appeasement in the Past. It's very true that it's a different world since the days of the Axis Powers and the Cold War, but appeasement has always had the same effect. Daniel Pipes correctly believes that America is clearly a force for good.
This country is a beacon of freedom and prosperity and we are responsible for South Korea's freedom and prosperity as well as China's growing economy. There are 1.25 million Korean Americans living in our country because of our freedom and prosperity. Thousands of them are orphan Koreans adopted by American families. A little bit of respect and gratitude is not too much to ask of these flag-burning Anti-American Demonstrators.
Due to extreme- leftist (not attacking liberals just leftist extremists) propaganda it is suddenly us who is the greedy villain, the force for evil, and the evil empire. South Korea's govenment is not perfect and has historically had alot of corruption. However, it is much freer and prosperous than the starved police state of Noth Korea. South Korea has historically had the better economy, freedom of speech, and freedom pf religion. There are plenty of older Koreans who are still very grateful for America's sacrifices.
Sadly, as Daniel Pipes states, many young Koreans are beginning to believe that North Korean problems are som herehow America and South Korea's fault. The exact same thing happened in pre-WWII Europe. Hitler had fascist sympathizers in the Western European and North American democracies. Hitler and his sympathizers claimed the free world was responsible for his aggression, we were the haves and they were poor have-nots. Some nations, like the French people were strongly weakened during Hitler's invasion, because they had little confidence in their democratic government. This is how the Axis justified their agression against other countries, and when they invaded other countries, Nazi traitors and far-right fifth columnists played major roles in the invasion, as well as the administering of Hitler's conquests.
Everyone wants peace. Hopefully, one day there won't be American troops in Asia and hopefully this conflict with North Korea with the help of China and South Korea can be solved peaceably. However, Daniel Pipes is right in not letting America lose her self-confidence because of the rants of Communist barbarians and their sympathizers.
