I'm always desperately wondering what could make countries go mush-headed like this."The inability to imagine evil." That's the best answer I've heard. For all of our depictions of evil in art, narrative, cinema, we still can't take it seriously. It's a failure of the imagination, or perhaps more specifically the education of our imaginations.
