Pipes's courage

Reader comment on item: Muhammad Ali's "Beautiful Soul"

Submitted by Larry Derfner (Israel), Dec 1, 2005 at 11:29

A few points:
1. It takes quite a bit of audacity to write off Ali's support for the Pearl family when Judah Pearl is so appreciative of it. Pipes really doesn't like to admit when he's wrong, does he?
2. Ali "humiliated," "degraded" and "physically abused" his opponents? It was part of his act, part of his psych-out routine, and he was a fighter, remember.
3. I don't see Pipes rebuking white celebrities for getting divorced and fathering children out of wedlock, and I've heard there are such cases.
4. Neither do I see him castigating the U.S. for courting Marcos, or Israel for courting Idi Amin and Mobutu. This, of course, is a partial list of the dictatorships courted by the U.S. and Israel...
5. Ali "rejected his country in its hour of need"? He refused to fight in a war he didn't believe in and paid a heavy personal price for it, while chickenhawks... used college deferments and other dodges available to the American elite to duck out of a war they did believe in.
