You make some compelling arguments.

But the honor has been bestowed.

I understand that as a columnist, your obligation is to speak to events.

Ali's ability to influence events has passed. I just wonder if sometimes it's not more important to save your criticism for more important issues.

Who is honored and why is not a trivial matter; a proper understanding of history is crucial to understanding one's present and future. That is why this argument over Muhammad Ali matters. It also explains the many comments on this site and the many bloggers who have taken it up.
