Is Islamic law incompatible with Canadian law?

Reader comment on item: Enforce Islamic Law in Canada?

Submitted by Solomon (United States), Sep 27, 2005 at 10:49

Your article states "Over the years, Jews, Catholics, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mennonites, and aboriginals, among others, made use of arbitration to settle family law questions without using Ontario's court system. The system quietly worked."
Ontario Premier McGuinty states that Islamic law is incompatible with Canadian law, but will accomodate it by changing Canadian law to no longer permit religious arbitration for everyone.
That makes no sense.
