Burkini or Bust

Reader comment on item: Ban the Burqa, Allow the Burkini

Submitted by William (United States), Aug 23, 2016 at 15:42

The article fails to deal with what is perhaps the most important aspect of the matter, which is the context in which it arose. The controversy, such as it is, began with the spectacle of Muslim women wearing these stupid floppy leotard-like things while playing volleyball. My guess is that if the Burkini Movement becomes ingrained that the sport itself will die. Who the hell would even want to watch women's volleyball if it were not for the skimpy bikinis which are now the trend?

One final thought, conflating the burkini w a wetsuit simply means that the author has most likely never surfed California beaches...

Daniel Pipes replies:

So far as I am aware, volleyball had nothing to do with the ban that began in Cannes. If I am wrong, show me the evidence.

And if you don't want to watch women in burkinis playing volleyball, that is obviously your prerogative. But it is no less theirs to play in whatever garment they choose.

I lived in Malibu for a season.
